At Midland Surgical Associates, we perform some surgeries using the Da Vinci Robotics system when it is advantageous to the patient. Robotic surgery is similar to laparoscopic/endoscopic surgery, as it allows for smaller incisions and is minimally invasive. It can often provide the patient with a shorter recovery period, less scarring, less blood loss, less risk of infection, a shorter hospital stay, and less postoperative pain, swelling, and bruising.
The Da Vinci robot by Intuitive Surgical allows for more precise movements than endoscopic surgery, and the robot is fully operated by the physician from a console with both hand and foot controls. The system was designed to handle more complex surgeries than most robotics.
It has four arms with wristed instruments that can bend and rotate more than the human hand. These arms can hold scalpels, scissors, cautery instruments, an endoscopic camera, and other objects. The endoscopic camera or laparoscope sends images to an enhanced 3D and HD video monitor, providing the surgeon with the best possible visualization of internal structures.
The Da Vinci Surgical System’s ergonomic capabilities have been designed to enhance laparoscopic procedures and give the surgeon the maximum dexterity and precision. As a result, it can be used for many cardiac, colorectal, gynecologic, head & neck, thoracic, urologic, and general surgical procedures.
Your surgeon is in 100% control of the Da Vinci robot at all times, and the robot also performs more than a million safety checks every second. It has already been used successfully on more than 3 million patients worldwide.
Feel free to ask us about robotics and whether they can be used in your case.
