Vascular Testing Center

Comprehensive, Non-Invasive Vascular Diagnostics
At Midland Surgical Associates, our Vascular Lab provides one of the most comprehensive selections of non-invasive vascular diagnostic studies in West Texas. All testing is performed in our clinic using state-of-the-art ultrasound technology by Registered Vascular Technologists, ensuring accurate results in a comfortable, convenient setting.
These painless studies help evaluate circulation, detect vascular disease early, and guide treatment decisions to reduce the risk of serious complications such as heart disease, stroke, or limb-threatening conditions.
What We Evaluate
Our vascular studies assess blood flow and vessel health in:
-
Carotid arteries (neck)
-
Abdominal aorta
-
Pelvic arteries
-
Upper extremities (arms)
-
Lower extremities (legs)
-
Venous system (veins)
If your physician has ordered vascular testing, our team is happy to explain each study and what to expect.
Advanced Diagnostic Capabilities
We offer a full range of arterial and venous ultrasound studies, allowing us to:
-
Diagnose peripheral arterial disease (PAD)
-
Evaluate stroke risk
-
Detect blood clots
-
Assess venous insufficiency
-
Plan surgical or endovascular treatment when necessary
When vascular or endovascular intervention is required, many procedures can be performed in our on-site Angio Suite, allowing for seamless coordination of diagnosis, treatment, and recovery.
Vascular Studies We Offer

Carotid Duplex Ultrasound
Carotid Duplex Ultrasound
The carotid duplex exam evaluates blood flow in the carotid arteries of the neck using B-mode ultrasound and Doppler technology.
This study allows us to:
-
Measure blood flow velocity
-
Identify narrowing or blockages
-
Assess stroke risk
The exam also evaluates:
-
Vertebral arteries (back of the brain)
-
Subclavian arteries (blood flow to the arms)
What to expect:
You will lie comfortably while gel is applied to your neck. A transducer is moved over the area to capture images. The test is painless and similar to other ultrasound exams.
Common reasons for this study include:
-
History of stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA)
-
Known carotid artery disease
-
Prior carotid surgery
-
Abnormal findings on physical exam
Extremity Arterial Duplex (Upper & Lower)
This study evaluates arterial blood flow to the arms or legs to determine if circulation is adequate.
Uses include:
-
Identifying arterial blockages
-
Evaluating leg pain, cramping, or fatigue
-
Assessing symptoms of PAD
The test is performed while you lie down, with gel applied to the area being studied. Doppler ultrasound measures blood flow through the arteries.
Abdominal Aortic Duplex
The abdominal aortic duplex examines the abdominal aorta and pelvic arteries to evaluate:
-
Blood flow
-
Vessel size
-
Presence of aneurysms
This painless ultrasound exam is especially important for detecting abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) before they become life-threatening.
Ankle Brachial Index (ABI)
The ABI test compares blood pressure measurements in the arms and ankles to determine the presence and severity of peripheral arterial disease.
-
Blood pressure cuffs are placed on the arms and legs
-
The test is quick and painless
-
Lower pressure in the legs suggests PAD
This study is often used as a screening tool for vascular disease.
Venous Duplex Ultrasound
Venous duplex studies evaluate blood flow in the veins and are commonly used to:
-
Detect blood clots (DVT)
-
Assess venous insufficiency
-
Evaluate leg swelling or varicose veins
The test is painless and uses ultrasound and Doppler technology to visualize veins and blood flow.
Vein Mapping
Vein mapping uses ultrasound to measure the size and quality of veins in the arms or legs.
This study is often used to:
-
Identify suitable veins for bypass surgery
-
Plan access for hemodialysis
-
Locate healthy veins when others are blocked
